Lionel Messi won it eight times, Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten both three times: the Golden Ball, or the Ballon d'Or. This prize is awarded annually by France Football to the best footballer in the world.

From 2022, the structure of the Ballon d'Or ceremony will be overhauled. The biggest difference: from now on it will be determined who was the best player of a specific season. Previously, a calendar year was always considered.

When Is the 2023 Ballon d'Or Ceremony?

The 2022 Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place on October 17, 2023.

For the 66th edition, the nominees and other guests will once again travel to the Chatelet Theater in Paris, where Lionel Messi was awarded the prize for the eighth time in 2022.

According to the organization, this has to do with ‘new criteria'.

At non GamStop bookmakers it is unfortunately not possible to place a bet on the possible winner of the Ballon d'Or. Nevertheless, it seems interesting enough to us to pay extensive attention to this trophy. In this article, you can read all about the renewed structure of the Ballon d'Or and the favourites for the win in 2023.

The Nominees for the Ballon d'Or

France Football, which has been organizing the World Footballer of the Year election for over sixty years, published a list at the beginning of August with the thirty players eligible to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or 2022. These are all nominees, by line. Behind the name of the player's current employer.

How Does the Election for the Ballon d'Or 2022 Work?

From 2022, the election for best footballer of the year will be adjusted on a few crucial points. Organizer France Football spoke in March of a “makeover that is crucial to meet the requirements of contemporary football”.

Up to and including the 2021 election, the Ballon d'Or was awarded based on performance over a calendar year.

The upcoming winner will be determined based on the 2022/23 season.

The choice of Messi in the winter of 2021 caused quite a bit of commotion, as PSG's acquisition had made little impression in the months leading up to the Ballon d'Or election. Competitor Robert Lewandowski, a favorite with the non GamStop sites, on the other hand, continued to score on behalf of Bayern Munich.

France Football also succumbed to criticism that no less than 170 journalists from many insignificant countries were allowed to vote. That number has now been reduced to 100, depending on a country's position in the FIFA rankings. In addition, experts and former professionals will be added to the panel that determines the nominees.

The new criteria also emphasize the fact that ‘individual performance must outweigh team performance'.

France Football hopes that the trophy cabinet and the ‘all-time' performance of a certain player will play a smaller role in a new election.

The Difference Between the Ballon d'Or & The Best FIFA Player

In 2010, France Football and FIFA decided to join forces and organize a joint election.

The World Football Association paid FF millions to take over.

For six years ‘FIFA' was added to the brand name. However, the collaboration ended in 2016 and since then the association has awarded its own prize every year: The Best FIFA Player, also known as World Footballer of the Year.

The big difference with the Ballon d'Or is that fans influence the eventual winner of The Best FIFA Player.

The online votes of supporters determine for 25 percent who gets the award. Journalists, national coaches and captains of the national teams also have a voice.

Lewandowski finished first in both 2021 and 2020. The Polish striker trumped Messi (2021) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2020).

Ballon d'Or Winners of the Last Years

Messi took the honour in 2021. It led to quite a bit of controversy. Favorite Lewandowski finished in second place in the election, with Jorginho (Chelsea) as number three. Below is an overview of all winners of the Ballon d'Or since 2011. Note that due to the corona pandemic, no award ceremony took place in 2020.
